Isn't the issue really how much performance you want vs. how much you need? When I rode my 305 Superhawk all over Calif., I was satisfied with it because it's what I had. I was satisfied with all my bikes -- the hopped up Norton was the fastest; but, I didn't really need all that speed.
I knew people who toured on the 305 Dream. ANYTHING bigger was considered a "big bike"! If I'd ridden the Savage into the high school parking lot, I would've been the envy of everyone -- except for the guy who owned a Bonneville, and another guy who owned a Harley.
I could buy a bigger bike -- but, I CHOOSE to ride the Savage (AND CUSTOMIZE) for now.
So, to me, it's perception & taste. BTW, wait til you see my customized Savage (even after owning BSA, Norton, Harley, Moto Guzzi, etc., etc.)! I think the Savage has more customizing potential, in some ways, than any of those bikes. You're starting out with more style. I don't expect to go 120 MPH -- I don't have to. I just wanna putt.
